2. PEOLC: Communication and conversations (Informed level)
We will award this Open Badge to people who demonstrate their knowledge and skills around effective communication and conversations. This is integral to supporting and improving palliative and end of life care service provision.
The Enriching and Improving Experience Framework identifies the knowledge and skills required by all workers who need to have effective conversations with people who may be experiencing distress and uncertainty, provide support and share decision making. Good communication is also essential to enable effective teamwork in and across teams. The framework has five domains and this badge reflects the core knowledge and skills considered integral to having effective conversations and good communication to deliver high quality palliative and end of life care at the Informed level.
Each domain presents four levels of knowledge and skills outlining what workers need to know and do. The levels of knowledge and skills workers need may differ across the five domains depending on their degree of involvement in palliative and end of life care; and their responsibilities in caring for and supporting people, their families and carers.
To earn this badge, you will need to:
- complete pages 20 to 27 of the Informed about palliative and end of life care workbook
- in your own words, tell us about your understanding of the differences between verbal and non-verbal communication (75 words minimum)
- in your own words, tell us what difference this will make to your practice (75 words minimum)
- discuss what your understanding of active listening is with your manager/supervisor/colleagues and tell us how this skill will improve the outcomes of people receiving your service (50 words minimum).
We will decline applications for this badge that don’t demonstrate all the points from the criteria.
