Positive Behaviour Support #11 – Reducing restrictive practice
This badge relates to chapter 11 'Reducing restrictive practises' of the Personal Behaviour Support e-Book.
This badge relates to chapter 11 of the Positive Behaviour Support e-Book and will describe the link between use of PBS and reducing restrictive practices. PBS has a commitment to non-punishment-based approaches. Any strategies which are aversive or unpleasant for the person, or that use punishment should not be considered.
This chapter aims to develop your understanding of restrictive practice and how a PBS approach functions to reduce or eliminate the use of restrictive practices. This is important for everyone, including people who may be subject to legal restrictions such as being detained in an inpatient setting.
To be awarded this badge, you must:
Using the information in the section ‘Recognising Restrictive Practice and Considering Alternatives’ on pages 144 -145, consider examples of potential restrictive practices for someone you support.
Think about some alternatives to consider and note these down. Discuss your ideas with a colleague.
What is the potential impact on the person if restrictive practice is used on them?
Submit this along with learning activities 30-33 from this chapter to apply for the open badge for this chapter.
