SCMA Childminders: Child Development: Observation, Assessment and Planning
Completing this Open Badge will enable participants to develop their understanding of the vital role they play in supporting children’s learning and development. The importance and benefits of observation and the part it plays in assessing developmental needs, the different types of assessment, planning for progression and what to do if a child is not progressing.
Childminders should be able to demonstrate:
- that you offer a service to children of differing ages and abilities and know whether what you are offering is effective in achieving progress for each individual child.
- that you observe and assess the development needs of each child in their care and follow the frameworks and guidance to meet Scottish Government requirements.
To earn this badge, you will need to:
- Have completed the SCMA Child Development: Observation, Assessment and Planning CPL workshop or completed the SCMA Child Development: Observation, Assessment and Planning e-Learning programme.
Tell us the following:

- What does being a good observer mean to you in your childminding setting?
- Tell us how you will use what you have learnt on the course to improve and develop your practice in relation to Observation, Assessment and Planning?
- What is so important about a child having secure attachments?
