Provision of Wheelchairs
The NHS wheelchair service has a responsibility to provide wheelchairs to patients that meet the criteria outlined in the link below. The range of devices available from the service includes the following:
- Manual wheelchairs (attendant/occupant propelled) and Children’s buggies.
- Powered Wheelchairs – indoor only, indoor/outdoors. Special control systems can be included.
- Specialist Seating – pressure management, postural control. Seating is provided primarily for use within wheelchair systems issued by the service.
It is important to remember that wheelchairs are mobility devices and should not be used as a replacement for appropriate static seating. This badge aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to complete a referral form for an appropriate patient.
To achieve this badge you must:
- Read page 24 of the Protocol for the Provision of Equipment in Care Home Document.
- Read the appropriate wheelchair criteria e.g. Attendant manual, occupant manual etc. Rehabilitation Technology Information Service (ReTIS) (scot.nhs.uk)
- Watch NHS Highland video on how to measure for a wheelchair (3 mins) – Wheelchair assessment tool : measuring | Turas | Learn (nhs.scot)
- Tell us about what you have learned from these activities (150 words min).
- Discuss what you have learned with someone (e.g. Line manager or colleague) and how you will apply this in practice and make a short note of this discussion. (50 words minimum).
