A risk worth taking: scenario one
This Open Badge is awarded to people who work through the first scenario of our interactive risk resource and complete a reflective account to demonstrate their learning.
We developed the resource to help people think about:
- what risk means
- where their attitude around risk comes from; and
- other people’s perceptions of risk.
People from across health and social care can use the resource collaboratively to gain a better understanding of themselves as individuals and also about each other’s organisation. There are three scenarios to work through. Each scenario includes views from different professionals and how they would deal with the risk factors covered in the scenario.
Before applying for this badge you will need to:
- complete the self-evaluation questions if you have not already done so
- work through the I’ve booked us a holiday scenario and discuss the activity questions with your colleagues and manager, preferably as part of a group discussion (60 minutes)
- What risks may be associated with how Karen funded this trip?
- What is your definition of respite?
- Where does corporate risk feature in this?
- Is Karen at any higher risk than anyone else going on holiday?
- Are there any capacity issues?
- Do you need permission? Who would give it? Is the carer ‘required’ to do it?
- How can you see this happening?
- Thinking about the scenario which includes different perspectives about the level of risk, working agreements, capacity and consent, and financial matters, tell us about three things you have learned, using the three questions to support your answer:

- How has your definition of risk changed or been challenged?
- Who do you need to speak with to do things differently? (please include a minimum of 200 words).
- Tell us how the discussion you had with your manager or colleagues helped you to think about what you might do differently in the future (minimum 100 words).
Applications for this badge that don’t demonstrate the criteria or fall below the minimum word count will be declined.
