SafeMed: Principles and good practice
This Open Badge is available to anybody working in social services who completes module one, Principles and good practice, of our Safe Administration of Medication resource. To obtain the badge, you need to work through the module, discuss your learning with your manager or tutor and submit the evidence requested within the criteria.
Once awarded, this badge is only valid if you have it endorsed by your manager or tutor.
Module one looks at principles and good practice within the safe administration of medication. It explores:
- freedom of choice
- person-centred support
- appropriate use of medication
- working in partnership
- the setting of your workplace
- protecting people
- covert medication.
Our Safe Administration of Medication resource is designed to support you while carrying out your day to day duties with the public. You’ll find the three modules useful if you’re preparing for assessment for a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) in Social Service and Healthcare (eg ’Administer Medication to Individuals’) or the Professional Development Award, ’Administration of Medication’.
This badge is intended to complement, not replace, accredited training. It is not evidence that someone is competent in the administration of medication.
To earn this badge, you will need to:
- work through module one of our Safe Administration of Medication resource
- discuss activities one, five, six and seven with your manager or tutor and tell us something about this discussion (150 words minimum)
- discuss the administration of medication policies and procedures in your workplace with your manager and provide a short summary of this to show your understanding of these (100 words minimum)
- tell us about three things you learned from module one and why this is important to you (150 words minimum)
- tell us what you are going to do more of or differently as a result of this learning (100 words minimum).
We will decline applications that do not provide enough evidence showing how you have met all these criteria.
Important
Once your badge has been awarded, you will need to:
- ask your manager or tutor to endorse your badge with a statement confirming they are confident you have understood and completed module one.
Your badge will be revoked if this does not happen within three months of it being awarded to you.

3. I wrote or recorded my evidence, and I have not copied it from anywhere else. The core content, ideas and examples are my own original work. I agree that I will only use AI tools under the rules outlined by the SSSC, and if I do so, I will explicitly declare this use in my submission and provide a valid link to the chat history for the assessor to review.
4. I give consent for the SSSC and the people I share this badge with to use plagiarism and AI detection tools to validate the authenticity of the evidence I have submitted.
5. I understand that it may take up to 28 days to assess my application and that feedback cannot always be provided if it is unsuccessful.
